Sector Initiatives

The Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board (MAWIB) sector initiative is a new approach to workforce and economic development. MAWIB’s sector projects are partnerships that focus intensively on specific industries over a sustained time period and are customized solutions for multiple employers within a regional labor market. MAWIB and its partners seek to strengthen economic growth and industry competitiveness by creating new pathways into targeted industries, and toward good jobs and careers that provide entry-level workers with family-supporting incomes, benefits and career pathways. Currently, MAWIB’s sector projects have centered around two industries: Retail, Hospitality and Tourism and Healthcare.

Retail, Hospitality and Tourism

The Business Services division at MAWIB operates a facility called CareerWorks in conjunction with Multicultural Community Services, MATC, YWCA, and the Bayshore Town Center. CareerWorks is located at the Bayshore Town Center, 5800 N. Bayshore Drive, and is open Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. CareerWorks is an employer’s resource center that provides many services to help companies find qualified, skilled employees who are a good fit for their businesses in the retail, hospitality and tourism sector. CareerWorks also provides job seekers with individual skill-building opportunities as well as group classes developed to train participants in the retail, hospitality and tourism industry.

Healthcare

MAWIB has partnered with the Milwaukee Area Workforce Funding Alliance and the Milwaukee Area Healthcare Alliance to create the CareerWorks Healthcare Training Institute (HTI) to address the current and future workforce needs in the healthcare industry. The CareerWorks HTI is a partnership between the Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board (MAWIB) and the Milwaukee Area Healthcare Alliance (MAHA). MAWIB develops and leads innovative initiatives that respond to changing workforce needs. MAHA is an innovative collaboration between the YWCA of Greater Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Area Health Education Center (Milwaukee AHEC), healthcare employers and educators. The YWCA brings its comprehensive knowledge of workforce development programming and Milwaukee AHEC brings its expertise in diversifying the healthcare workforce.

The CareerWorks HTI strives to be responsible to regional healthcare employer needs by delivering comprehensive, customized talent development services to future healthcare employees. The Health Profession Opportunity Grant was awarded to MAWIB.  In addition to MAWIB, this grant will also rely on the collaborative efforts and continuing participation of several community partners, as well as the State Workforce Investment Board, the State Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards, the State Department of Children, the WOW Workforce Board, MATC, several area hospitals and Federally Qualified Health Care Centers. The training takes place at the CareerWorks HTI. The training institute is located in the central city at 334 West Brown Street and is open six days a week with day and evening hours. It is a readily-accessible center that provides healthcare employment, targeted training and education, and a range of supportive services for job seekers and employers.
