A: MAWIB staffs a team of business services specialists who have a proven record of providing employers with effective and efficient solutions to meet their workforce needs. The business services’ staff utilizes information obtained from employer surveys, economic and labor market research, and advice/council from professional and business associations to develop strategies that focus on workforce solutions that meet the current and future needs of a demand-driven workforce system, as well as:
- support employers in recruitment, applicant screening, pre-employment testing and skill assessments;
- provide innovative technology to evaluate and match job applicants to available positions and quickly identify only the most qualified and mutually-interested candidates for available positions;
- collaborate with local and regional business teams that are connected to provide and deliver an array of workforce development, employment and training services throughout Milwaukee County; and
- develop sector strategies and initiatives that are industry-focused approaches to workforce and economic development.

A: MAWIB can provide services to small, medium and large businesses that are public or private, and for profit or nonprofit.
Q: Is there a cost or fee charged for MAWIB business services?
A: MAWIB has access to a variety of public and private funding sources to help businesses offset costs associated with many workforce services. Some services are totally free and others may have a shared fee applied depending upon extent and duration of the service request.

A: MAWIB can provide services through its workforce delivery network systems to employers and businesses throughout Southeastern Wisconsin.
Q: If I am not looking to hire new workers, are there services available to help with my existing workforce?
A: MAWIB can partner with employers and training vendors to provide workers with needed skills to meet special requirements outlined by the employer through our customized and on-the-job training programs. Employees may also be eligible to receive additional services provided under the Workforce Investment Act that are delivered at the specialty/career opportunity center locations.
Q: How are the Specialty/Career Opportunity Centers connected to MAWIB Business Services?
A: The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) assigns local responsibility for administering WIA services to the Milwaukee Area Workforce Development Board (MAWIB). In collaboration with the City of Milwaukee Mayor’s Office, MAWIB is responsible for the coordination of services to businesses and employers through certified comprehensive one-stop job centers (located under specialty/career opportunity centers) and an extensive network of partners. Certified Comprehensive Centers in Milwaukee are the Northeast and Southeast Comprehensive One-Stop Job Centers.

A: MATCH has been designed specifically for capturing and managing the unemployed, underemployed and gainfully employed through community programs and advancing them to become workforce-ready candidates. MATCH was also designed for all businesses regardless of size or internal hiring resources to quickly and easily create detailed searches for qualified personnel.

A: Sector Initiatives are regional, industry-focused approaches to workforce and economic development. They are structured to accommodate low-income individuals and to bring together key partners to advance the skill level of workers in a specific industry. Sector Initiatives improve access to good jobs and/or increase job quality in ways that strengthen an industry’s workforce.
Q: What Sector Initiatives are MAWIB currently engaged in?
A: One of the sector initiatives MAWIB is engaged in is the Retail/Hospitality/Tourism Sector Project. It is designed to provide workforce solutions for employers in the industry cluster surrounding the Bayshore Town Center area by providing recruitment, screening and training services that are tailored to real employer needs identified by industry research and surveys.
Another sector initiative MAWIB is engaged in is the Healthcare Sector Project. It is designed to work in collaboration with the Milwaukee Area Workforce Funding Alliance and its recently designated healthcare intermediaries to administer specific projects funded to train entry-level and mid-level healthcare workers to develop and enhance opportunities in healthcare career ladders.

A: An industry cluster is defined as a group of employers in a region closely linked by common product or services, workforce needs, similar technologies, supply chains, or other economic ties.
Q: What is a career ladder?
A: A career ladder is a series of positions, work experiences, and educational benchmarks or credentials that offer occupational and financial advancement within a specified career field or related fields over time.
Q: Why did MAWIB choose these sectors?
MAWIB chose these sectors after reviewing the current and future labor market information for the Milwaukee area, the demographic data of job seekers, and current workforce profiles. In addition, MAWIB conducted a thorough assessment of all available employment training resources. In both sectors research showed they had the greatest percentage of job growth; especially for entry-level and mid-level job seekers who would have the opportunity to strengthen their core job skills through credentialed trainings.
Q: What is CareerWorks?
A: CareerWorks is MAWIB’s strategic partnership model for our sector initiatives. It is designed to identify and implement solutions to “skills gaps” by using new approaches to improve access to better jobs for workers. It also helps businesses find the qualified workforce they need to prosper.

A: We have a variety of training types available to individuals who are dislocated workers and/or enrolled in the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) program:
- ITA trainings: trainings specific to your individual career goals.
- On-the-job training: training that is a shared cost between the employer and MAWIB.
- Sector training: sector-driven training based on needs of multiple employers.
